It’s been 31 long years since Mario’s debut on a mobile platform. Super Mario Land launched in Japan on April 21, 1989 alongside the new portable Gameboy system. Nintendo believed that they needed a character like Mario alongside the launch of a new platform to help it be successful, and thus the green-and-black iteration of mustachioed plumber was born. There would go on to be three Mario Land titles in all through the life of the series. Check out the video above from the Gaming Historian for some cool information on the series.
