In the vein of “things we haven’t heard about in what seems like an eternity”, Google has some big news about Stadia today. They’ve stated that starting today, Google Stadia is free to all users where the service is available for use. All you need to take advantage of it is a Gmail account (also free).
You can sign up on the Stadia page with your Gmail account and get instant access for purchasing on the Stadia store. Games will run at 1080p/60 FPS for free users. The other half of the announcement is that users can now also take advantage of 2 months of Stadia Pro for free as well (usually $9.99/mo), which comes with a handful of free games that remain free as long as you continue to have a Pro subscription. These games include:
- Destiny 2: The Collection
- SteamWorld Dig 2
- SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech
- Serious Sam Collection
- Stacks on Stacks (on Stacks)
A Pro subscription would normally allow players to game at 4K/60FPS/HDR format, but due to increased internet usage with the COVID-19 outbreak, Google is planning to downgrade all streaming to 1080p for the time being, though that change has not gone into effect yet.
So if Stadia is something that you’ve been curious about, now’s your chance. You’ll still need either the Stadia controller and a Chromecast, or one of each of compatible keyboard/mice combinations.
